Happy November

Hard to believe it is November already!  This year has really flown by and thankfully, it has been a fabulous year for Cobblesstone Destinations!  The Eugenia home has been very popular and a lot of our guests want to return again next year!

We have a lot of winter projects going on in the house this year.  Carpet cleaning, furniture cleaning, of course a deep cleaning, landscape projects, the house trim is being painted, and a new outdoor shower is being added.  Some come springtime, the house will be ready to welcome its new guests!

Just because it is the off season, don't think that there isn't anything to do.  The island has all kinds of events taking place.  I'll blog about them as they get closer.  And of course, Charleston, is only 40 minutes away.  There is ALWAYS something going on downtown.

Now is a great time to take a staycation.  Just before all the craziness of the holidays!

Carriage Tours

What's more southern than a horse drawn carriage?  How about a horse drawn carriage giving you a fantastic tour of Charleston, SC?

I must admit that it took me 9 years of living in Charleston before I finally decided to go on a tour.  And it may or may not have been due to having family in town and needing a way to show them around without hours and hours of walking.  And sadly enough, I haven't really done my homework on Charleston history.

There are a few different horse drawn carriage tours in Charleston, but by far the best is Palmetto Carriage.  They take great pride in their job, they care for their animals, and overall they are just a great group of people.

You get such an interesting perspective of downtown Charleston on your tour.  See all that Chucktown has to offer such as churches, mansions, southern gardens, parks and beautiful and historic homes.  Hear about the blacksmith who make most of the wrought iron fences in Charleston or the great earthquake that forever changed the city.  This is fun for the entire family!

Angel Oak

This is a must see if you are in the Charleston area.  Angel Oak is the oldest living (man made or living) thing east of the Rockies.  Standing at a towering, 65 feet tall, this Live Oak tree is approximately 1500 years old.  That's right-1500 YEARS old.  Stop and think about that for a minute.  It sprouted 1000 years BEFORE Christopher Columbus discovered America.

The tree covers over 17,000 square feet, a diamater spread of 165 feet, and a circumference of 25 feet.

You're probably thinking, ok but it's just a tree.  This tree is absolutly magnificent.  Imagine all of the wars, hurricanes, droughts, etc that this remarkable tree survived.  (Not to mention land development)  The best thing about this tourist site, is it is FREE.  That's right-FREE.

Picnic tables are scattered throughout, so why not pack a cooler with lunch and spend an hour exploring the tree, taking some beautiful pictures and just enjoying Nature's beauty?

Think PINK

October is breast cancer awareness month and the restaurants at The Sanctuary are promoting "Dining in Pink."    Certain tables in each restaurant will have a special pink tablecloth indicating that 50% of all funds from that table will go to the Hollings Cancer Center.  (The Hollings Cancer Center is South Carolina's only national cancer research center.)

So why not dine in the pink?  You show your support to a respected cancer center and you help stand up to breast cancer!  Dining in pink starts October 1st and ends October 31st, 2010.

Also, if you are in the Charleston area, the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure will take place on Saturday, October 16th on Daniel Island.  This will be the second year that I have walked with friends and it is an amazing morning.   You see all these beautiful women, almost all of who have been touched, affected, or suffering from cancer.   Their friends and family walk with them and in some cases for them.  It reminds me just how blessed I am to have my health.  My grandmother always says, "If you have your health, you have everything."

Wishing everyone a healthy October.  THINK PINK!

Attention to the little details

We pride ourselves at Cobblestone for thinking ahead of our guests.  What their needs, wants, etc might be.  A lot of things we do go unnoticed, and that's ok, that's what we want.  We want you, our guests, to feel at home in our house.

One of my least favorite things to do is grocery shop on vacation.  I just want to arrive, and have all my favorite food items nicely put away in the kitchen.  I can walk in, grab a twizzler or maybe a chocolate chip cookie (yep-those are two of my favs) and relax.  Ok-so maybe not just one twizzler or ONE chocolate chip cookie-but who is counting!  :)

We will grocery shop for you!  Submit your list at least 48 hours in advance and we'll have your initial grocery order put away and ready for you when you arrive.  And we thoughtfully place everything in the house for you.  From the fridge to the counters, the freezer and bar area.  Every item you order is in its appropriate place!  And yes, we are kind of excited by how nice it looks when it is all put away....

Walk above the Cooper River

Want to take a beautiful walk above the Cooper River?  How about walking across the Arthur Ravenal Jr. Bridge going from downtown Charleston into Mt. Pleasant SC?

Opened in July 2005, this newly constructed bridge has been the early morning and late evening walking/running/biking spot in Charleston.  After all it is our only "hill" in the Charleston area.  (Seriously-stop and think about how flat we are here!)  :)

The bridge design features a 1,546 long main span, the longest such span in all of North America and signature diamond shaped towers that reach 572 feet into the air.  The Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge carries eight 12-foot wide travel lanes and a 12 foot wide bicycle and pedestrian path. Both directions of travel include four foot inside and outside shoulders. The pedestrian lane follows the Charleston Harbor side of the bridge.  See yourself 186 feet up from the shipping channel?  It's pretty cool actually.  Run it there and back and you are looking at about 8 miles.

Each year the bridge (including its predecessor) hosts the annual "Cooper River Bridge Run"  This event his held in April and is one of the most popular events in Charleston.

So be sure when you visit Charleston, you at least walk to the top of the bridge.  It offers you amazing panoramic views of Charleston and it's surrounding islands.

Magnolia Plantation

Located about 40 minutes from Kiawah Island is the beautiful Magnolia Plantation.  Magnolia is one of the most frequented tourist attractions in Charleston.  With it's beautiful gardens, plantation home, swamp garden, fantastic function space, petting zoo, and a train ride, how can you not want to make a stop here?   The current main house – the core of which was built prior to the Revolutionary War and floated down the Ashley River to Magnolia after the Civil War — gives a glimpse of plantation life in the 19th century and beyond. Ten rooms are open to the public, furnished with early-American antiques, porcelain, quilts, and other Drayton family heirlooms.

You can make a full day or a half day out of Magnolia Plantation.  The beauty of the gardens is unbelievable.  We once took 2 and a half hours of walking through, marveling at all of the wildlife, in just the swamp garden.  I think I took over 120 pictures that day.

Make sure you stop by the petting zoo.  Yes, you can be above the age of 6 and still enjoy the peacocks, and the pigs, and roosters.

A fun fact about the garden?  Some of the gardens are over 325 years old, making it the oldest, unrestored garden in the United States. If you can, go there in April when the azeleas are blooming.  You will not be disappointed.

For more information about the plantation, visit their official website at http://www.magnoliaplantation.com/

The Ocean Course

The Ocean Course is certainly South Carolina’s #1 golf adventure! It was the site of the 1991 Ryder Cup Matches, better known as the “War by the Shore,” which pitted the best U.S. touring professionals against the best players from Europe. Kiawah Island Golf Resort is excited to be hosting the 2012 PGA Championships.
All 18 holes offer panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean, and it is by far Kiawah’s most demanding and challenging test of golf. In fact when the course was originally built, there were no prevailing winds, but Dye changed that by building one course with winds that affect a golfer from the east and the west. Dye’s wife, Alice, suggested raising the course so that while golfing, you are looking straight at the ocean and not into the dunes.
Golf Digest named The Ocean Course "#4 Public Golf Course in U.S." and "America's Toughest Resort Course." It is one of only 17 "5-star" courses in North America in Golf Digest's "Best Places to Play" reader's poll. GOLF Magazine has rated it #4 in its "Top 100 Courses You Can Play" list.
**PS-the picture shot is a view from the back of the clubhouse. I unfortunately only had my camera phone on me this day, so it isn't the best picture. However, i think you can see how amazing playing this course would be.

Groupons!

I must say when I first got an email about www.groupon.com I was like, yeah, what a scam this is. After taking about ten minutes to read online what it is all about, I must say I am 100% addicted. I miiiiiiight just be Charleston’s biggest groupon fan. The best thing about Groupons (other than being in a bunch of cities and countries) is that when you travel you can see if your destination city has Groupons. Then just watch for really cool “groupons” to be featured in that city that you would enjoy. We are traveling soon to Colorado and I have already made a really cool purchase for a small little restaurant that we probably would have never heard of or gone too. It is totally unique, a little funky, and a little out there, but I just know we are going to love it. So join Groupons today and then watch for fun savings to come your way! You can find all kinds of great Charleston hot spots on this site!

Oak Point

Oak Point may be located just off of the island, but don't mistake this course for being sub par.  Oak plays 6701 yards long and is actually one of the more difficult courses.  Clyde Johnston built this course with rolling hills and a lot of water hazards, Oak Point is a great course to challenge beginniner golfers and also more skilled golfers.  For the strategist golfer, this is your course!

A little history on Oak Point-it was built on old tomato and indigo farms.  If you look closely into the woods of the course, you may get a glimpse of history.  Oak Point is definately worth the 10 minute drive from the main gate and I certainly recommend playing here.  A beautiful clubhouse overlooks Haulover Creek, where you might get lucky enough to see a few bottlenose porpoises playing in the evenings.  Insider tip-Oak is the least expensive course to play.  So if you are looking to stretch your dollar, play here!  You won't be disappointed.

Cougar Point

Welcome to the Gary Player course.  Re-designed in 1996, this golf course plays 6875 yards.  It is full of long par fours and challenging par threes.  The front 9 runs along the Kiawah River offering spectacular marsh and river views.  Be sure to have your camera ready when you get to hole 17.  It is one of the most scenic holes on the island.  Cougar Point was recently awarded 4.5 stars in Golf Digest's "Best Places to Play."

Golf on Kiawah

Fall brings a different type of feeling to the island.  Most families have returned to their home states; another summer gone by.  Children are back in school and the island quiets down a bit.  The hot, scorching temperatures break, and all of us Southerners breathe a sigh of relief as the humidity falls.

We can now enjoy being outdoors, be it on our porches, in our yards, and on the golf course!  Charleston is full of amazing golf courses.  Courses that challenge the most expert golfer to courses for beginners.  Kiawah in particular has an amazing array of golf courses.  This week I'll highlight each course.  No matter what golf course you choose, you will not be disappointed.  Kiawah sets the bar for golf.

Fall Tour of Homes & Gardens-Charleston

Have you ever walked around downtown Charleston and thought "Gosh I'd love to see the inside of these gorgeous historic homes."  How about the beautiful gardens hidden behind these houses-little courtyards that lead you to a true southern garden.

Each year the Preservation Society of Charleston offers fantastic walking tours of downtown homes.  From September 23rd-October 24th, you have the opportunity to see these homes up close and personal.  Enjoy unique neighborhoods that represent Charleston's amazing culture from the Colonial era to the present.  Most of these homes are privately owned and are only open exclusively for this event.

Tours are Thursday and Friday evenings from 7pm-10pm; Saturday & Sunday afternoon from 2pm-5pm.
Tickets are $45.  Visit http://www.preservationsociety.org/ for ticket details.

Kiawah's Natural Beauty

One of the most beautiful things about this island is its natual beauty.  You won't see tall skyscrapers or huge vertical hotels on Kiawah Island.  Everything is built to certain standards to enhance, not take away, from Mother Nature.

Each year, millions of tourists come through Kiawah-either staying for the day, a weekend, or a a week.  (Some are lucky enough to stay for several weeks)  Why do they love coming here?-because of its beauty, peacefulness, and tranquility.  So we have one request to ask you.  Respect our island.  Respect the wildlife, the beaches, the bike trails and other public spaces.

So many times I will see children filling up beach buckets with wildlife from the beaches.  LIVE wildlife.  Starfish, hermit crabs, sand dollars etc.  And while, yes, I realize that they are children having fun on the beach, take this unique opportunity to TEACH them about the wildlife.  Teach them to throw back a starfish or observe the hermit crab.  Don't allow them to stick them in a bucket to bring back to your home or villa.  9 times out of 10, they are left outside to die and are then thrown away.  What a waste.

The Nature Center offers so many amazing, hands on, classroom sessions on the wildlife.  Why not sign your children or yourself up for one of the sessions or tours!

Groom Your Puppy and Help with the Oil Spill!
Posted by JacquieJune 11, 2010If you are feeling helpless about the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, you can stop! There is a way for concerned citizens to help. I was very thrilled to stumble upon information about an organization called Matter of Trust. Matter of Trust is working with some local pet groomers and veterinarian offices to collect pet hair in order to help clean up the oil spill.

The donated pet hair is collected and stuffed into nylon stockings and Matter of Trust makes booms that are put in the water to absorb the oil.

Wildlife on Kiawah

Kiawah Island is full of amazing wildlife. There are days were you take its beauty for granted, but today I was reminded of just how unique our wildlife is. Alligators are part of Kiawah's natural habitat and 9 times out of 10 you will see them relaxing on the side of a lagoon or trolling the pond waters. Today, however, a mighty beast made his presence known. He traveled about a quarter of a mile in the early morning and decided he'd look for his mate near the hotel. After about 25 minutes of forming a game plan, the Town of Kiawah, along with the assistance of Resort Security and Recreation, relocated the gator. I imagine I won't be seeing this again in my lifetime and am so excited I had the opportunity to be right there next to the action.

Enjoy the pictures!

Easter Special Events on Kiawah Island

Easter on Kiawah is such a beautiful time of the year! Azaleas are in full bloom, the grass is turning green, all of the animals are out and the Easter bunny makes his debut on the island. Other than 4th of July, this is one of the busiest seasons for us. There are so many family activities that take place at Night Heron Park and at The Sanctuary.

We also welcome the first Mingo Point Oyster Roast of the season on Thursday, April 1st. Enjoy beautiful views of the Kiawah Island River while enjoying some of the best food in the LowCountry.

On Saturday, April 3rd, come to Night Heron Park for the sunset festival from 5:30 pm-8:00 pm. Food, games, and live music!

Celebrate Easter with us on Sunday, April 4th. There are two Easter egg hunts; one at Night Heron at 10 am and one on the Grand Lawn of The Sanctuary. At Night Heron, there are all day activities from sand sculpting, to teen night laser tag, to family ice cream sundae social.

The Sanctuary is offering 2 different dining options on Easter Sunday. Enjoy a beautiful and bountiful grand buffet in the Jasmine Porch or the Grand Oaks ballroom. The chefs of the hotel really out do themselves with the buffet. The amount of food and the taste of the food is incredible. You can't beat Easter at The Sanctuary.

Kiawah Island Marathon

The 33rd annual Kiawah Island Marathon will take place December 11th, 2010. Yes, it seems awfully early for this post, (it isn't even Easter yet!) BUT, the marathon registrations opens August 1st, 2010. So make sure to mark your calendar. Registration for the full marathon fills up really quickly, as does the half.

The race starts at East Beach Village-right near the Villa registration area and our Kiawah house is less than a 5 minute drive to EB Village. It would take you about 10 minutes to walk to the start line. Imagine yourself running the full or the half and coming back to relax in an ice bath in one of our oversized jetted tubs in one of two of our master bathrooms. Or re-coop in our outdoor hottub located on a private deck. The Eugenia house is a perfect home for you and your cheerleaders to stay at during this big event. Red Sky Grill

Tucked away only minutes from Kiawah Island is Seabrook Island. Seabrook is known for its quiet, laid back way of life. Just steps away from the security gate of Seabrook is a lovely restaurant called Red Sky Grill. Red Sky was purchased a few years back by Matt Bollus. Chef Bollus expanded and gutted the restaurant to create a new dining space. A lot of thought was put into the space but better yet into the menu. Chef's devotion to fresh and clean flavors is evident in his seasonal menus. During particular seasons Chef Bollus offers 1/2 price bottles of wine (up to $50) and every Thursday is a wine tasting/dinner night. Be sure to try the butternut squash ravioli. Some of the best you will taste. For more information or to make dinner reservations log onto www.redskydining.com And remember, Red Sky is only minutes from our Eugenia home. Log onto our website at www.vrbo.com/230630 for rates and availability.
